Math and Reading Resources

The role of the Math and Reading Resource teacher is to assist teachers in all grade levels by providing support in the Reading and Math curriculum as needed.  It involves working in small flexible groups in accordance  to student abilities and needs.

Reading

In working with the Primary  Grade levels, students are exposed to “guided reading,” in combination with self-selected reading, writing and a strong phonics program. The children learn to use reading strategies, including context clues, letter and  sound recognition and word structure, when reading materials unfamiliar to them.

In addition, Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students benefit from experiences that support fine motor skill development in the hands and fingers.  Student work on dexterity and strength through fun activities and manipulatives designed to achieve appropriate pencil grasp and ultimately, to encourage proper handwriting skills.

In cooperation with  the classroom teacher, the reading teacher assists in tracking student growth through assessments and observation.

In the Intermediate Grades, the students become more skilled at using a range of strategies, such as identifying main ideas, drawing conclusions, predicting outcomes, and inferencing. The reading teacher works with the classroom teacher to provide small group instruction in preparation for developing skills needed to perform well  on the English Language Arts (ELA)  Exams given in Grades Four and Eight. Our teachers work in a team approach to enhance our reading program by developing good listening skills, comprehension and writing skills in all subject and grade levels.

In addition to Reading instruction, I also administer testing, both State and classroom tests in various subjects to those that are absent.

Math

St. Peter's now offers a Math Resource Program.  Similar to Reading instruction, the Math teacher assists teachers in all grade levels by providing support in the Math curriculum as needed.  In a small group atmosphere, in accordance with the classroom teachers, students receive ongoing review and maintenance of prior knowledge of concepts, skills and problem solving.  Students are reached wherever they are in their cognitive and mathematical development, with specific suggestions for re-teaching some, and reinforcing learning in all.

If you feel that your child needs additional help in reading or math, please contact your classroom teacher.  Reading and math assistance is available to all students of the school, if needed.
